Sri Lanka is strategically located on the world trade map, being located at the centre of the east and the west maritime routes and the international time zones.
The textile and apparel sector is one of the most significant and dynamic contributors to Sri Lanka's overall economy. This fully integrated industry possesses a firm resource base and superior logistical support services. Viewed as its core strengths is its ability to produce high quality goods at competitive prices whilst differentiating itself as an ethical sourcing destination. It is the "only outsourced apparel manufacturing country in Asia" which has signed up to 39 of the ILO (International Labour Organization) Conventions. Additionally, Sri Lanka has ratified all 8 of the core Labour conventions of the 1998 ILO Declaration on Fundamental Principles and rights at work.
The ILO Convention 138 on minimum age for admission to employment, the ILO Convention 105 on Forced Labour and Convention 182 on worst forms of child Labour have all been ratified by the Sri Lankan Apparel Industry.
Sri Lankan Apparel Industry looks beyond its business portfolio, over the years it has taken a hands-on role in improving socially deprived communities. The projects implemented by the Apparel Industry have hugely benefited Sri Lanka in a big way. One of the good examples of such project by the Sri Lankan Apparel industry was the Relief Programme. After the tsunami hit Sri Lanka in 2004, relief was provided on short and long-term basis in terms of immediate relief; rations, shelter and clothing. In relation to long-term support; loans, housing restorations and equipment were generously given to the shattered communities across the island. Melbourne Textiles alone was instrumental in the reestablishing and reinstating of families affected by the tsunami, and our work in the area still continues.
The Apparel Industry is also involved in other ongoing CSR projects like Environmental restoration, construction of houses, schools and libraries, renovation of hospitals and financial contributions towards education are just a few of the Industry's diverse range of ongoing community service projects.
The industry is constantly upgrading technology available such as: computer generated design, video conferencing electronic data inter change, so that customer needs can be met more effectively.
Sri Lanka has established itself as a reliable supplier of quality garments at competitive prices. The industry is constantly looking out to expand its marketing links, and welcomes buyers interested in exploring the opportunities available.
